Music Theory is the general term for the study of specific techniques of composition in music. At the introductory level it involves primarily the analysis of musical works, but the intermediate and advanced student will become not just an analyst but a composer of their own works. The most basic aspects of music can be broken down into two categories: pitch and rhythm. Pitch is the description of a particular note in the musical scale. A single note cannot be defined as rhythm; the moment several single notes are followed in a sequence, one can speak of 'a rhythm' (or duration). The most important aspect is that in rhythm, one is not concerned about any pitch relationships or pitches at all; instead one differentiates notes and their pitches from rhythm (the duration or rhythmic value):
